Swords are sometimes lost, damaged, broken or stolen, especially the swords of adventurers and rogues like our erstwhile heroes. As the author explains in one of the stories (Or was it in a forward or something?) Fafhrd and the Mouser have had many swords throughout their travails, and though these swords have been many and varied, they always name them the same - Scalpel for the Mouser's rapier and Greywand for Fafhrd's longsword. This is just one of the many Scalpels. Perhaps some of the others are depicted on the previous few pages.
